“Gibson is the first Native artist to represent the U.S. with a solo exhibition in the 94 years that this country has had a pavilion…In addition to Venice, a book he conceived and edited, ‘An Indigenous Present,’ came out last summer, and two major new projects for him — the facade commission for the The Metropolitan Museum of Art and an exhibition at MASS MoCA [opening Nov 2] have recently been announced. https://lnkd.in/gxmicNSY
About us
In May 2024, MASS MoCA will celebrate its 25th anniversary under its new Director, Kristy Edmunds, not only as a contemporary art museum and performing arts venue, but also as a creative campus with a regional, national and global impact. MASS MoCA is one of the world’s liveliest centers for making and enjoying today’s most evocative art. With vast galleries and a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor performing arts venues, MASS MoCA is able to embrace all forms of art: music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, theater, and new, boundary-crossing works of art that defy easy classification. From its beginnings as the major textile mill Arnold Print Works in the mid-19th century, to its days as the Sprague Electric Company in the mid-20th century, to its current iteration as a globally renowned contemporary art museum and fabrication center, the 16-acre MASS MoCA campus has a rich history of serving as the economic engine of the city of North Adams and the surrounding region. "If you’re looking for an example of artificial intelligence making a Berkshire County business more innovative and productive, you could start with a 101-year-old dairy farm known for its prized Jersey cows... You might also look to North Adams, where digital multimedia artists working from the MASS MoCA campus are envisioning the future of immersive art exhibits using AI-generated content and virtual reality." Berkshire county high schoolers will exhibit their artworks at MASS MoCA in a pop-up exhibition that opens with a reception on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 6–9pm in Building 5. This event is free and open to the public. This year’s Teen Invitational is produced by MASS MoCA’s Teen Activators. “If you have a conflicted relationship with the amount of stuff you consume and the trash you generate, theater and film director Robin Frohardt may have just the immersive experience for you. The Plastic Bag Store, dubbed by Frohardt as “a tragicomic ode to the foreverness of plastic,” is set in a faux supermarket that pokes fun at consumerism and contains thousands of items hand-sculpted by the artist from plastic refuse.” Opens May 9 @ MASS MoCA Williamstown Theatre Festival Pomegranate Arts https://lnkd.in/gbdfBcB5

MASS MoCA pilots new civic partnership initiatives to help imagine what a creative economy can become for North Adams and the region. On the heels of its annual Community Day which welcomed over 2,650 people for free, MASS MoCA will continue to amplify its commitment to North Adams by piloting several creative placemaking and civic partnership efforts over the next year — which intersect with immediate and long-term community needs in housing, civic infrastructure, environmental sustainability and economic development. MASS MoCA has received a $1M grant from the Barr Foundation to support its capacity to work with the City of North Adams, including dedicated staff positions and research consultant expertise on major infrastructure projects such as the Reconnecting Communities Grant, the North Adams Adventure Trail design development, and participation with the Hoosic River Revival/US Army Corps of Engineers assessment of the existing flood chutes. MASS MoCA’s Placemaking Task Force — in consultation with civic and business leaders, local and regional developers, cultural institutions, artists, and other community-led organizations — will further identify and prioritize creative and sustainable approaches to accelerate these and other approaches for the museum campus and North Adams community. “The City of North Adams is our home. Direct economic impact through the creative economy and cultural tourism is stated in our original charter 25 years ago, and is an integral part of our vision for the future,” said Director Kristy Edmunds. “MASS MoCA has grown to become an anchor institution for the City, region and state. We actively participate in both our local communities’ civic aspirations and in identifying solutions to challenges, which require continuous engagement, mutual innovation and dedicated investment.” https://lnkd.in/gQJBDce2

In Nov 2022, MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient, Taylor Mac spent three weeks in residency at MASS MoCA with a host of creative collaborators to further develop “Bark of Millions,” a study of queer luminaries across the ages, with 54 original songs written by longtime musical partner Matt Ray and performed by two dozen singers and instrumentalists. Its latest manifestation opens tonight at Brooklyn Academy of Music, produced by Pomegranate Arts and Nature’s Darlings. #pride https://lnkd.in/gfmek87m

In What Way Wham? (White Noise and Other Works, 1996-2023) is on view at MASS MoCA through March 31, 2024. “Under the second [postcard]—a similarly old-fashioned image of the Wesson Hospital, also in Springfield—Grigely writes, ‘I was born here on June 9, 1967.’ Grigely’s second life began when, on that June day, during a game of King of the Mountain, he rolled down a hill and fell on a twig that pierced his left eardrum. A fever had already taken the hearing from his right ear when he was a year old. Now he was completely deaf.” https://lnkd.in/gZXejHTm

“From the beginning of my career, I have been a very process-based abstract painter but I’ve always had actual content that I wanted to discuss, which had to do with Native American materials and history and how it intersected with abstraction,” Gibson said. “But I had to build the context for people to understand what I was doing—with video, performance, sound, painting. Now I’m almost referencing these histories by way of things that I’ve also made over the last 25 years.” https://lnkd.in/g_DvjPDp
